At Renaissance Facial Plastic Surgery, our aesthetic staff offers a variety of chemical peels and our aesthetician will choose the peel most appropriate to your skin care needs and desired outcomes. During a consultation at our Decatur, Alabama practice, our skin care specialists will help you choose the chemical peel that is most appropriate for your needs.
The Chemical Peel Procedure
The first type of chemical peel that our Aesthetic Staff offers is a light “lunchtime” laser peel. The exact solution used in a light chemical peel varies according to the patient’s skin type and goals, but light chemical peels are always gentle and can be completed within an hour. Light chemical peels are usually made from a combination of alpha hydroxy acids (derived from sugar cane, milk, fruit, and other natural substances) and beta hydroxy acid (derived from fruit). The mixture is applied to the patient’s skin to remove the outer, damaged layers of skin and encourage the production of new skin, rich with collagen and elastin.
For patients who require more advanced rejuvenation, our staff offers a deeper chemical peel made of a mixture of TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and Jessner’s, Solution ( lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol). This type of chemical peel is similar to a light chemical peel in that it removes dry, damaged skin and promotes the regeneration of healthy, younger-looking skin. However, the TCA/Jessner’s Peel penetrates deeper into the skin for more dramatic results and is often a more effective solution for patients with darker skin.
For both types of chemical peels, multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal results. The total number of treatments and the time between each one is based on the patient’s individual needs and goals. Chemical Peel Benefit
Chemical peels are an excellent alternative for patients who wish to look younger and more refreshed but do not want to undergo facial plastic surgery. Chemical peels help smooth away lines and wrinkles, promote even skin tone, and improve skin texture. Results can last for up to several years.
Recovery from Chemical Peels
No downtime is required for “lunchtime” chemical peels. Patients can return to their normal activities right away. Typically, patients who are treated with the deeper TCA/Jessner’s chemical peel do not experience any pain or soreness and also are able to resume their normal activities without having to undergo a recovery period. However, because the skin may appear red for a few days after TCA/Jessner’s treatment, some patients choose to stay at home until the redness completely fades away.
